January 10th
Winchester Cathedral

On 10 January 2009 the choir returned to Winchester Cathedral (our first concert there was in 2006). We were greeted by the rewarding sight of a full house which will have helped contribute significantly to the sponsor's cause (the Alzheimer's Society). In the magnificent setting of the Cathedral's famous nave the choir responded with a splendid performance, spurred on its desire to fill the spectacular interior with 80 voices by the astonishing power and tone of soprano soloist Elizaberth Donovan's contribution. Choir soloist David Williams' inimitable "Working Man" again drew a terrific audience response, with Haydn James' baton and Annabel Thwaite's accompaniment guiding the choir through a repertoire suitably tailored to such an awesome venue. We were supported in key moments by cathedral organist Simon Bell. The BBC's Sally Taylor's opening and closing comments complemented Berwyn Evans' typical mixture of humour and solemnity in his role as compère.
